The original use of marshmallow to make a candy dates back to ancient Egypt, where the recipe called for extracting sap from the marshmallow plant and mixing it with nuts and honey. Now instead of the traditional marshmallow recipe using powdered marshmallow root the manufacturing companies use gelatin, which is derived from animal hides and bones. Gross!
I suggest everyone to try the vegan marshmallows made by Sweet & Sara found in the fridge at Whole Foods near the bakery. I tried out Sweet & Sara's smores. It is all covered in a Belgian chocolate with a graham cracker bottom. The bottom didn't taste like graham cracker, but it was a nice cookie taste. The marshmallow was the best part! The smore was too big for me to eat all of it in one helping so I ate a quarter of it and saved the rest for later. It was a bit pricey, but it's good for an occasional treat.
