About Foodbourne Illnesses

I've noticed a lot more cases of food recalls have been going on this year. Some of the recalls aren't even getting to the public's awareness which is just wrong and freaky. Here's some info:

After eating contaminated food, people can develop anything from a short, mild illness, often mistakenly referred to as "food poisoning," to life-threatening disease. Some people are at greater risk for bacterial infections because of their age or an unhealthy immune system. Young children, pregnant women and their fetuses, and older adults are at greatest risk. In the United States of America, for example, around 76 million cases of foodborne diseases, resulting in 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths, are estimated to occur each year. Imagine all the ones that go unreported!!!

Most of these foodborne illnesses come from the meat of the animals we eat. The foodborne illnesses on fruits and vegetables we buy is caused by the runoffs from these meat producing industries. Cows are fed mostly corn in factory feedlot farms, even though their digestive systems are only meant to eat grass and other forage. This makes the cows sick (hmm... E-coli anyone?), alters the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of the fats to unhealthy levels, and also diminishes the healthy fats that would occur naturally in grass-fed beef. All of these problems go away if our cows are fed what they were made to eat naturally - grass! This also goes for the chicken and fish that don't eat what is natural to them.
I highly suggest everyone to watch the documentary, "Food Inc."---it can be watched on youtube and is also available to rent on netflix.
